According to Grupo La Provincia in Argentina, Newcastle United have made a first approach for Gimnasia y Esgrima forward Jan Hurtado.

The Magpies are looking to secure the future of manager Rafael Benitez ahead of the summer transfer window, but will also have their sights on players to bring in.

Striker Salomon Rondon is a key target from West Bromwich Albion having enjoyed a strong season on loan with the Magpies, but could one of his international teammates be heading to St James’ Park?

Grupo La Provincia claim that Gimnasia attacker Hurtado is on the Newcastle radar, and the Magpies have even made a first approach to sign him by enquiring about his services.

A bid from Newcastle is believed to be imminent, with Atalanta their main rivals for a deal after the Venezuelan international impressed in Argentina.

Hurtado, 19, joined Gimnasia from Deportivo Tachira last year, and has hit two goals in 17 games whilst also earning a first cap for Venezuela.

A winger or striker with a decent turn of pace whilst being well-built at 6ft tall, Hurtado is an exciting young attacker with great versatility and huge potential, which Newcastle fans should lvoe.

Whether signing the teenager instead of compatriot Rondon will appease fans is another matter though, as supporters would no doubt love to have both rather than one or the other.
