According to The Athletic, James McCarthy is likely to stay at Crystal Palace, amid reported interest from Celtic and West Bromwich Albion.

It has been reported that West Brom manager Sam Allardyce wants to take McCarthy to The Hawthorns, as the Baggies aim to avoid the dreaded drop from the Premier League.

Earlier this month, 90min reported interest in the former Everton central midfielder – described as “a top-class player” by Palace manager Roy Hodgson in Football.London in February 2020 – from Scottish Premiership giants Celtic.

The Athletic has reported that Celtic would be ‘an option’ for McCarthy in the summer of 2021, adding that it is ‘more likely’ that the 30-year-old will stay at Palace until the end of the season and then assess his options.

Sensible idea

McCarthy is out of contract at Palace at the end of the season, and there are only a few days left in the January transfer window.

There is no point in the Republic of Ireland international central midfielder rushing to a decision now.

It would make sense for the former Wigan Athletic and Everton man to wait until the end of the 2020-2021 campaign and then look at all his options.
