According to Bild, Eintracht Frankfurt defender Jetro Willems will re-sign for Newcastle United at the end of the season.
They claim that a number of players could be leaving Frankfurt this summer, and Willems is one of the most likely to go.
The report states that Willems ‘will return’ to Newcastle on a free transfer with his contract set to expire.
Willems spent last season on loan at Newcastle but suffered a major knee injury in January 2020, cutting his impact short.
The Dutchman is back from that injury but hasn’t played a single game for Frankfurt this season, meaning he has gone almost 18 months without playing a competitive game.
That’s something of a risk for Newcastle to take, but they saw the best of Willems during his loan spell and may feel that he is worth the gamble on a free transfer.
Willems, 27, became a fan favourite after two goals and two assists in 19 games, and could have returned in January but Steve Bruce scrapped the move according to The Chronicle.
Having shown in November that he still watches Newcastle, Willems clearly still has a lot of love for the Magpies and would surely jump at a return if these reports are true.
