Jack Rodwell joined Sunderland from Manchester City in the summer of 2014.
Jack Rodwell will not play in the Premier League next season, but the Sunderland midfielder will still earn £60,000 per week in the Championship, according to The Sun.
While other members of the current Sunderland squad will have to take a 40% pay cut, it seems that Rodwell will continue to earn what he is earning right now.
According to The Sun, in order to persuade Rodwell to join the Black Cats from Manchester City in the summer of 2014 for a transfer fee of £10.25m, Sunderland had to waive off the 40% pay-cut clause in the contract.
“I believe there is one player who has not but I think the rest are,” The Sun quotes Sunderland manager David Moyes as saying when asked about the wage reductions written into the players’ contracts. “I believe it is all 40 per cent.”
When asked if the player is Rodwell, Moyes said: “Yes.”
Rodwell did well during his time at Everton, but the 26-year-old midfielder failed to make a big impact while he was at City.
While it would be easy to blame Sunderland for not inserting the relegation pay-cut clause in the England international’s contract, it should also be noted that the Black Cats would probably have not been able to secure the signature of the midfielder otherwise.
