David Wagner is something of a miracle worker at Huddersfield after guiding the Terriers to promotion and then keeping them in the Premier League against all the odds last season.

Wagner knows Huddersfield must continue to improve their squad to have a chance of repeating that feat in an increasingly competitive top flight.

To that end Ramadan Sobhi, Juninho Bacuna, Terence Kongolo and Ben Hamer have all joined the Terriers already this window, with Wagner being linked with a number of other names.

One of those is France Under 21 international and former Nice forward Neal Maupay, who played in the Championship for Brentford last season.

According to a report from Yahoo Sport FR – as repeated by Get French Football News, Huddersfield are in talks for the 21-year-old who enjoyed a solid grounding in English football with Brentford last term scoring 13 goals and featuring in 42 Championship games.

That made him Brentford’s top scorer and has attracted the attention of Wagner who knows the Championship only too well.

Maupay was quite a coup for Brentford and has plenty of promise as evidenced by his caps for France at youth levels including Under 21 for whom he played when he was just 17.

Huddersfield are already proof that Championship players do have the ability and quality to step up to Premier League level and compete.

So supporters should embrace the signing of Maupay if it comes to fruition rather than raise transfer market expectations to unrealistic levels after just one season in the top flight.

Maupay was born in France but is eligible to play for both France and Argentina and cites Zinedine Zidane as his footballing idol.
