Would Derek McInnes leave a strong and stable Aberdeen side to take charge of a ramshackle Rangers?

Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha is seen during the Betfred League Cup Semi Final between Rangers and Motherwell at Hampden Park on October 22, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

It’s now two weeks since Pedro Caixinha was put out of his misery by Rangers. But, as of yet, there is still no new manager in place at Ibrox.

The name on everybody’s lips, however, is Derek McInnes. The Daily Record reported a fortnight ago that the Aberdeen manager is Rangers’ hot favourite and the 45-year-old certainly seems to tick if not all then most of the boxes.

He knows the Scottish league like the back of his hand, knows Rangers too as a former player and has also proven himself at the top of the domestic game, leading Aberdeen to three successive runners-up finishes.

And The Scotsman report that the Glasgow giants are hoping to sweeten the deal to lure McInnes away from Pittodrie and towards a side that finished one place and nine points worse off in 2016/17.

Rangers will reportedly offer McInnes a tempting personal package as well as a sizeable budget to bring in new players. The club are also willing to pay the £800,000 required to free the former West Brom man from his contract at Aberdeen.

A decent transfer warchest would surely make the vacant Rangers role all the more tempting for McInnes.

Rangers spent around £8 million to provide Caixinha with a raft of new players in the summer but the majority of those have disappointed greatly so far and look ill-suited to the Scottish game.

The Daily Record even claim that futures of Bruno Alves, Fabio Cardoso, Eduardo Herrera, Daniel Candeias and Carlos Pena are now hanging in the balance.

McInnes, then, would no doubt want to shape the squad in his image.
