The Stoke City man is said to be interesting both Derby County and Aston Villa.

The Daily Mail reports that Derby County are unlikely to follow up their interest in Glenn Whelan, which could boost Aston Villa’s chances of landing the Stoke City midfielder.

The Daily Mirror reported last week that Derby were ready to step up their pursuit of the Republic of Ireland international once they had sold Will Hughes to Watford, which has since happened.

However, it now appears as though Whelan will not be heading to Pride Park this summer, for reasons which are not disclosed by The Daily Mail.

The Stoke Sentinel reported earlier this month that the Potters had informed Aston Villa to pay £1 million for the 33-year-old, although it remains to be seen whether the Villans have maintained their interest.

Whelan is not the only midfielder to be linked with a move to both Derby and Villa this summer, with Wales international Joe Ledley also interesting the two sides’ respective bosses, according to The Daily Star.

Ledley, who is three years younger than Whelan, is available on a free transfer after Crystal Palace confirmed his contract will not be renewed when it expires at the end of this month.
