Tottenham Hotspur could have missed out on Brennan Johnson amid claims Chelsea did end up making a late push to sign him.

Chelsea returned to the race for Brennan Johnson but Tottenham Hotspur managed to secure the Welshman’s signature.

That is according to Foot Mercato, who claim that Tottenham were actually ‘close to being overtaken’ by Chelsea for Johnson.

It’s stated that Chelsea did actually have an agreement in place which involved cash plus Callum Hudson-Odoi heading to Nottingham Forest for Johnson.

Tottenham still managed to win the race though as Chelsea’s ‘deal fell apart’, whilst Forest were still able to sign Hudson-Odoi as a replacement on deadline day.

Spurs had made Johnson their top target in the weeks leading up to the transfer window having sold Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.

Johnson isn’t a direct replacement for Kane as a striker but he gives Tottenham a versatile attacking option right across the front line.

Add in the blistering speed Johnson possesses as well as his homegrown status and Tottenham appear to have landed an ideal addition to their attack.

Timeline of Chelsea’s interest in Brennan Johnson unclear

Foot Mercato’s report doesn’t state an exact timeline on Chelsea’s Johnson attempt but it’s indicated that this was a fairly late move.

Chelsea were keen on adding another winger and seemed likely to snap up Michael Olise before he chose to stay at Crystal Palace.

Johnson became a key target but reports indicated that Chelsea had pretty much given up hope.

The Times claimed just about a week before the transfer deadline that Chelsea had ended their interest in Johnson because he was so adamant about wanting to join Tottenham.

Maybe Chelsea did make another attempt in the week leading up to the deadline with Tottenham struggling to get a deal done.

Chelsea ended up signing Cole Palmer from Manchester City, seemingly focusing on landing a homegrown winger one way or another.

Tottenham will be delighted to have signed the ‘electric’ Johnson for £47.5million, and would have really been kicking themselves if Chelsea had hijacked them.
