Akpom played under Ibrox boss Mark Warburton previously, while a new striker could feature on Rangers’ winter shopping list.

Arsenal are set to loan out Chuba Akpom in the New Year, according to the Daily Mirror.

A number of clubs in England’s Championship are said to be keen on the striker who has scored three goals in four appearances for England’s Under-21s, but could there also be interest from north of the border?

Glasgow Rangers may be in the market for a new front man this winter, with Martyn Waghorn reportedly nearing the Ibrox exit door and no Gers player yet to exceed three goals in this season’s Scottish Premiership.

While Joe Dodoo’s emergence could cool Mark Warburton’s need for reinforcements, if an opportunity is there to strengthen then Rangers must surely take it as they look to secure second place (or better) in their first season back at the top level.

Akpom is rated highly by Arsenal – for whom he starred in pre-season and who tied him to a new four-and-a-half-year contract in 2015 amid interest from a string of other clubs – but is yet to properly experience first-team football on a week-in week-out basis. And Warburton, who signed the 21-year-old while manager of Brentford, could be the man to provide it.

The Rangers boss maintains strong links with Arsenal, from whom he loaned Gedion Zelalem last term, which could lean the Gunners in the direction of Glasgow when the offers come in, while Akpom need only look to the other side of Scotland’s second city to see how a young striker’s career can quickly take off after moving north.
