Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan wants to sign a new contract with the club amid transfer interest from European giants FC Barcelona.

According to the Daily Star, the Catalan side are interested in the 31-year-old Premier League star, with Barcelona eager to improve on their central midfield in the summer under Xavi Hernandez, who is a fan of Gundogan.

However, as per the report, the German international is not interested in moving to Spain, with Gundogan keen to sign a new contract with City as the midfielder remains one of Pep Guardiola’s most important players.

The former Borussia Dortmund star was arguably the best midfielder in the Premier League last season as Gundogan led City to the title once again, and now, the maestro is eager to pen a new contract with the Manchester club despite interest from Barcelona.

The La Liga side have already signed one player from City this year as Barcelona brought Ferran Torres, with the likes of Joao Cancelo, Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling also linked with a move to Guardiola’s former club.

Yet one player who seemingly won’t be making the move is Gundogan, who looks determined to remain with City and sign a new contract with the club to continue his legacy with the Manchester giants.

Gundogan might not be a guaranteed starter in the City XI this season, but there’s no denying the midfielder’s impact on the club since Guardiola made the German his first signing when arriving in 2016.

Indeed, Gundogan has been crucial to City’s rise under Guardiola since his appointment six years ago, and tying the midfielder down to a new contract will be important for the club’s future when the Catalan coach eventually leaves at the end of his current deal.
