Manchester City have reportedly reached an agreement with FC Barcelona for the sale of Ferran Torres, with Sergio Aguero’s recent retirement being a key factor in the deal.
According to the Athletic, the La Liga giants will complete a deal worth up to £50m for the 21-year-old attacker. Barcelona were able to afford Torres after receiving a bank loan to finance the move.
Moreover, the untimely retirement of Aguero has shaved an estimated €10m (£8.5m) from the Catalan side’s payroll. Meaning that Barcelona have the financial wiggle room to sign Torres in January.
Indeed, the transfer will come as a shock to many, yet for City, it could present an opportunity to invest in the squad in January, mainly in the attacking department.
Torres has not played for City in over three months due to a foot injury. However, with the club now making a substantial profit on the forward, Pep Guardiola’s side can afford to splash the cash on a quality attacking option to replace the Spaniard.
Indeed, whilst the Premier League giants went big on Jack Grealish in the summer transfer window, a natural striker could be the final piece of the puzzle for the Manchester side.
Torres sale to Barcelona opens up City to land dream striker

With the Spaniard set to recoup City up to £50m, the funds from Torres’ move to Barcelona could allow Guardiola’s side to sign an attacker who will be perfect to lead the line in 2022.
The likes of Erling Haaland and Dusan Vlahovic have been linked with City. And with Torres now close to joining Barcelona, the Etihad side have a free spot in the squad to bring in that one attacker who could complete the club’s forward line.
