Chris Brunt will trigger a contract extension clause when he plays two more games for West Bromwich Albion.
Brunt joined the Baggies in 2007, helping the club to two promotions out of the Championship and an eight-year stay in the Premier League – though that looks set to come to an end at the end of this campaign.
And with The Telegraph adding that he is set to start this weekend against Leicester City and will play a crucial role for the team in the final weeks of the season, it would certainly appear that he will have absolutely no problem activating that clause.
It has been an extremely disappointing season for the Baggies with relegation looking to be almost as certain as Brunt earning a new deal at The Hawthorns.
Alan Pardew’s men find themselves eight points off safety with nine games left and go into their clash with the Foxes having lost their last six in all competitions, so have absolutely no momentum to call upon.
The Telegraph reports that Brunt had taken Pardew and his teammates to task after the recent defeat to Huddersfield, and that is likely to have endeared the Northern Irishman to supporters further as it appears that he said what they have been talking about for weeks – though his role in Watford’s winning goal last weekend probably did his cause no favours.
But generally, Brunt looks to be the kind of player and presence in the squad that the club will need, if they do get relegated, if they are to ensure that they do what the likes of Aston Villa and Sunderland failed to do in recent years, and that is get promoted at the first attempt next year.
