The Telegraph claim Chelsea are considering a move to raid Leeds United for director of football Victor Orta ahead of the January transfer window – as Todd Boehly looks to bring in a man that can sort out Chelsea’s transfer strategy.

The Blues are on the lookout for a transfer chief, after Boehly was somewhat criticised for his scatter-gun approach to signings – following his takeover. Salzburg’s Christoph Freund has decided to reject a move to Stamford Bridge.

Orta, 43, is one of two targets for the role – with Bayer Leverkusen’s Tim Steidten also an option. Chelsea have been in talks with both men over transfer deals in recent history. Callum Hudson-Odoi, and of course, Raphinha in the summer.

Spanish chief Orta has been at Leeds since 2017 – forming a solid three-man team with owner Andrea Radrizzani and CEO Angus Kinnear. Together, the trio have guided Leeds back into the Premier League, after a 16-year absence.

Chelsea considering Leeds director of football Orta

Orta certainly deserves the attention. A passionate man, he has enjoyed huge success while at Elland Road. The first, being the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa – he man he suggested when finding a replacement for Paul Heckingbottom.

Then, there are some of his transfer deals. Illan Meslier at £5million. Raphinha at £17million. Jack Harrison at £11million. Patrick Bamford at a similar price. He has made some mistakes as all have, but most have been good.

It is not just Leeds on his CV either. Zenit St-Petersburg, Sevilla, Middlesbrough, Elche, and Real Valladolid all came before his Leeds spell. But it is certainly his work at Elland Road that will catch the eye for Boehly and Chelsea.

If Chelsea do swoop for Orta, Leeds would be losing a key part of their club. A crucially important cog that has embodied the hard work and passion of the Leeds fans. But he is more than deserving of the interest in his services.
