A report from the Shields Gazette has suggested that Chelsea coach Eddie Newton has applied for the managerial vacancy at recently-relegated Sunderland.

The Black Cats are still without a new manager following David Moyes’ departure at the end of this past season, but the Shields Gazette reports that there have been a number of candidates to register an interest in the role.

One such name is Newton, who currently works at Stamford Bridge and keeps an eye on the progress of the players who have left the Blues on loan.

While Newton is yet to manage a first-team, he has extensive experience as an assistant, having worked with Roberto Di Matteo at MK Dons, West Brom and Chelsea, being part of the backroom team that led the Blues to the Champions League win in 2012.

He also worked with the first-team during Guus Hiddink’s tenure, and it may not be out of the question to suggest that his current role may also boost his chances of impressing the Sunderland hierarchy as the club looks to bounce back following relegation.

He would have watched the likes of Tammy Abraham and Izzy Brown on numerous occasions during their respective Championship loan spells this past season, so may have his own ideas about what it will take to succeed in the second tier.
