Celtic looked to be favourites to sign Charlie Wyke, but they appear to have missed out on a deal to land the Sunderland striker.
The Bhoys may have extended the contract of Leigh Griffiths, but they still need to find at least one new striker for Ange Postecoglou.
The hot favourite has been Wyke, whose Sunderland contract expired on June 30th having refused to sign a new deal at the Stadium of Light.
Wyke, 28, smashed 30 goals in all competitions last season as he fired Sunderland into the League One playoffs, but seemed ready to make a step up.
The Northern Echo reported last month that Celtic were increasingly confident of signing Wyke on a free transfer, and then added that he preferred joining the Bhoys over Nottingham Forest.
Everything was pointing to Wyke joining Celtic, especially when he took to Instagram earlier today to confirm he was leaving Sunderland.
That doesn’t appear to be the case after all though, as The Northern Echo now claim that Wyke is set to sign a £10,000-a-week deal with Wigan Athletic.
A move to another League One club is a huge shock, especially if the chance to play in Europe with Celtic was real.
The Bhoys now need to go back to the drawing board in their search for a new striker, with Wyke set for Greater Manchester instead of Glasgow.
