Portuguese champions FC Porto missed out on a deadline-day deal to sign Danny Rose as they could not afford the Tottenham Hotspur man, according to the Standard.
Unless the former England international is willing to join a club in Russia or the Championship over the next two weeks, then he will be twiddling his thumbs on the sidelines until the window opens again in January.
As a certain Amazon documentary showed, Rose is not exactly loving life in north London right now.
After returning from a disrupted loan spell at Newcastle United, the 30-year-old has not been included in a single one of Jose Mourinho’s matchday squads.
What’s more, Sergio Reguilon has arrived from Real Madrid while Ben Davies is playing some of the best football of his Spurs career, pushing Rose ever further down the pecking order in the English capital.
In another world, the 30-year-old full-back could have been gearing up for a fresh start at a Porto side who cruised to the Primeira Liga title last season.
Sergio Conceicao’s side wanted a left-sided defender to replace the Manchester United-bound Alex Telles.
And, while Rose has lost a yard of pace during a couple of injury-hit seasons, Porto were willing to take a punt on a man who was on the verge of ‘world-class’ during the Mauricio Pochettino heyday.
With the Standard reporting that Porto could not finance even a short-term deal for Rose, this one-time Tottenham hero has been consigned to at least three more wasted months.
