Celtic winger Gary Mackay-Steven has rejected the chance to rejoin Dundee United on loan, reports the Courier.

Mackay-Steven is yet to feature competitively under new Bhoys boss Brendan Rodgers, owing to a recent operation on a foot injury, and the report claims the Ulsterman was open to the 25-year-old’s Parkhead departure.

However, Mackay-Steven, who scored 27 goals in 131 appearances for the Terrors between 2011 and 2015, does not appear to be on board.

The winger featured fairly regularly under previous Celtic boss Ronny Deila and is reportedly keen to stay and regain his place, despite the summer addition of fellow wide man Scott Sinclair from Aston Villa and return to contention of another, James Forrest.

Mackay-Steven, who began his career in Liverpool’s youth ranks, is also said to be interesting Premiership side Ross County.

Rodgers revealed at the weekend that he is expecting departures ahead of Wednesday’s transfer deadline, after admitting he has too many players at his disposal.

“The squad is still too big,” said the 43-year-old, as quoted by the Herald. “The problem we have is lots of players are really enjoying it, there’s a real high level in training and the intensity is good.

“We can see the other players getting fitter and stronger but unfortunately it’s the players who know they are getting limited game and it will be their decision over the coming days.”

According to the Herald, Bhoys midfielder Liam Henderson is another Championship target, with Hibernian keen on another loan deal.
