Celtic were said to be interested in signing the goalkeeper this summer.

The Daily Record report that Celtic won’t be signing Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman this summer after Neil Lennon dismissed the notion.

The Chronicle had reported earlier this week that the Hoops and Arsenal were amongst the teams looking to provide him with a Newcastle escape route.

The shot-stopper’s contract expires next summer and he’s said to be considering his options and keen to sort out a move away from St James’ Park on a temporary basis at least.

However, Lennon has shot down any suggestion of making a move for the player, apparently happy to move forward with current goalkeeping options Scott Bain and Craig Gordon.

Currently having a market value of £450,000 (Transfermarkt), he’s unlikely to be an expensive option for the Hoops but clearly either the club aren’t keen on the player or the timing is not right on a deal.

Woodman, 22, has previous experience of the Scottish Premiership after loan spells at Aberdeen and Kilmarnock. He is on the fringes at Newcastle but was utilised as their FA Cup goalkeeper last term.

Bain has been imperious between the sticks since becoming number one earlier this year, so the need to sign a quality guaranteed first-pick isn’t there. However, Celtic do need to start thinking about signing a goalkeeper, if not in this window then over the next couple.

Last season’s third choice Dorus de Vries has left the club, with a lack of experience behind duo Bain and Gordon. Gordon is also entering the twilight of his career at 36 and although clearly still a viable first-team pick, that won’t be the case forever.

It’s not a massive transfer priority, but something the club must consider if the right player comes along.
