Celtic reportedly looked at Jermain Defoe during the summer, while the striker was also heavily linked with heading to Ibrox and joining Glasgow Rangers.
Rodgers was handed a major setback during the previous window with Moussa Dembele leaving Parkhead. Odsonne Edouard’s move was made permanent, but the Hoops did not manage to sign any replacements for Dembele.
But it appears that they considered a move for Defoe. The Sunday Post reports that the Bhoys were weighing up a move for the 36-year-old, but ultimately decided against going after the Premier League legend, who had been heavily linked with a potential Ibrox switch in the same window.
It will be interesting to see whether either of the two sides look at reigniting their interest in the veteran when the window opens next month.
The Sunday Post suggests that Celtic could look at an experienced option in January – hence why Defoe’s name has been mentioned – and Defoe would arguably be a fantastic signing for either side.
His wages would obviously be a stumbling block. But if they could get Bournemouth to continue paying some of his salary, then it seems to be a no-brainer to get the former England international in.
Both sides lack numbers up front, so a striker looks set to be high on both managers’ wishlists. And signing Defoe would be a major statement for either team as they potentially battle over the title during the second-half of the campaign.
