Celtic are hoping to bring the midfielder in on loan initially, before potentially making the switch permanent in the summer
A report in the Herald Scotland has explained that Celtic want to bring Everton midfielder James McCarthy in on loan during the January transfer window, before possibly making the move permanent next summer.
Brendan Rodgers wanted to bring the 26-year-old in during the previous window, according to the Daily Record. But despite that deal failing to materialise, it appears that he is still optimistic about landing the Toffees man.

The Herald Scotland reports that the Hoops plan to offer the former Wigan man the chance to move to Parkhead until the end of the campaign, but will have to clear some stumbling blocks if they hope to get a deal across the line.
McCarthy earns £70,000 a week at Goodison Park so the Herald Scotland suggests that the Bhoys will need his parent club to pay most of his wages for the duration of a loan spell while Celtic pay a significant loan fee.

While the Herald Scotland suggests paying that fee will not be a problem – given the financial rewards from their Champions League run this term – they also point out that McCarthy is attracting plenty of attention from other clubs, which may make any deal more expensive or more difficult to agree altogether.
Although Celtic’s midfield has been fantastic this season, adding McCarthy to their ranks will undoubtedly give them that extra boost of quality.
The midfielder has struggled for opportunities under Ronald Koeman this season, but is still going into what should be the best years of his career with more than 200 Premier League appearances under his belt.
