Celtic are interested in signing Poland international Pawel Dawidowicz as a £1.4 million replacement for Jozo Simunovic, according to the Glasgow Evening Times.

With funds tight all across European football due to the ongoing financial crisis, it was something of a surprise when The Hoops elected to release both Jonny Hayes and Simunovic over the weekend.

The Scottish Premiership champions have let two experienced, proven performers depart for absolutely nothing. And the task of replacing both Hayes and Simunovic promises to take a sizeable chunk out of Neil Lennon’s transfer budget.

Though, at just £1.4 million, Dawidowicz would not require a bank-breaking sum.

The 6ft 2ins Pole has been overshadowed by fellow Hellas Verona centre-back Marash Kumbulla this season but his impact on a newly-promoted team should not be underestimated.

Sitting eighth in the Serie A table, Ivan Juric’s Verona have been one of the surprise packages of the 2019/20 campaign with Dawidowicz featuring 14 times in the Italian top flight.

A tall and technically gifted defender, the once-capped international has completed an impressive 87 per cent of his passes this season – meaning he shouldn’t struggle to adapt to Lennon’s possession-based style.
