Celtic are reportedly keen on Leicester City defender Filip Benkovic.
According to the Daily Mail, Celtic want to take defender Filip Benkovic on loan from Leicester City if Dedryck Boyata moves on this week.
The Bhoys narrowly beat Hamilton Academical 1-0 on Sunday afternoon, with controversial defender Boyata not only making his return to first-team action, but also scoring the only goal of the game.
Celtic are still expected to sell Boyata this month after a breakdown in the relationship between club, player and manager in recent weeks, whilst his contract expiring next summer means cashing in now is smart.
Brendan Rodgers would undoubtedly want a replacement, but with Aberdeen’s Scott McKenna seemingly unattainable, the Daily Mail report that Leicester City’s Filip Benkovic is wanted.
That may seem bizarre; it’s just over two weeks since Leicester snapped up Benkovic from Dinamo Zagreb in his native Croatia, paying £13million to lure the 6ft 4in centre back to the King Power Stadium.
Yet with Harry Maguire, Wes Morgan and Jonny Evans ahead of him in the pecking order, as well as fellow new boy Caglar Soyuncu, Benkovic may be allowed to leave on loan for first-team football before Friday’s transfer deadline.
Benkovic has been on the Celtic radar for some time now, with The Scottish Sun reporting in January 2017 that the Bhoys were looking to lure him to Scotland to boost Rodgers’ defence.
More than 18 months on, the 21-year-old still appears to be a Celtic target, and he could reunite with former Dinamo Zagreb teammate Jozo Simunovic if he does make a move to Celtic Park this week.
