West Bromwich Albion are on the verge of signing Celtic target Shane Duffy from Brighton and Hove Albion, according to The Daily Record.

It has been reported that Celtic want to sign Duffy on loan from Premier League club Brighton in the summer transfer window.

However, according to the report, West Brom – who will play in the top flight of English football next season after clinching automatic promotion from the Championship – are on the verge of securing the services of the 28-year-old Republic of Ireland international defender on a permanent contract.

Missing out

Duffy is a very good central defender who has established himself in the Premier League, and the 28-year-old would be a brilliant signing for Celtic.

The Hoops could do with a no-nonsense defender in their squad this season, and the Republic of Ireland international would give manager Neil Lennon a valuable option.

However, it seems, according to the report in The Daily Record, that Celtic will miss out on the defender to West Brom.

Meanwhile, former Rangers player Andy Halliday has said that it will be interesting to see how Celtic cope with already being behind Rangers in the Scottish Premiership title race this season.

The Bhoys have picked up four points from two matches, while Steven Gerrard’s side have won all three of their games.

Halliday said on BBC Sportscene: “Bolingoli’s stupidity has given Rangers a huge opportunity to take advantage of the situation.

“This Celtic team have never been in a position to chase, so it will be interesting. They will have these games in hand, but everyone would agree you would rather have the points in the bag.”
