Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic have told Shabab Al-Ahly that they are willing to pay in excess of £3.5 million to sign Iran international Mehdi Ghayedi during the January transfer window, as reported by the Irna News Agency.

After missing out on Riley McGree to Middlesbrough, the Glasgow giants are once again casting their net far and wide in pursuit of new signings.

Celtic have signed five players from non-European clubs since Postecoglou’s arrival – Liel Abada, Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi – taking a sledgehammer to the widely-held belief that ‘tried and tested’, proven Premiership operators are the way to go.

Maeda, the 2021 J-League Golden Boot winner, scored inside four minutes of his Hoops debut against Hibernian on Monday night.

Ideguchi and Hatate also made their Celtic bows at Parkhead, the latter performing with a guile and grace that wouldn’t look out of place at the Mariinsky Theatre.

As for Abada and Kyogo. Well, let’s just say everyone’s knows all about the summer signings from Maccabi Petah Tikvah and Vissel Kobe these days.

Postecoglou deserves the benefit of the doubt, then, as he looks to bring in another player who’s name will ring few bells in Glasgow’s East End.

Will Mehdi Ghayedi be Celtic’s next signing?

Varzesh3 claim that Celtic have approached UAE outfit Shabab Al-Ahly on no less than three occasions to enquire about Ghayedi.

A title-chasing Red Knights side are desperate to retain the services of their star man. But Celtic are not taking ‘no’ for an answer.

Postecoglou is desperate to secure Ghayedi’s signature.

And Celtic have told Shabab Al-Ahly that are happy to stump up more than £3.5 million for the diminutive dynamo; a twinkle-toed 23-year-old attacking midfielder who’s scored 26 goals in the last two seasons.

Ghayedi’s performances in the current campaign have been slightly on the disappointing side. But Celtic, and Postecoglou, are happy to overlook his recent dip in form.
