STV claim Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths is to undergo surgery this summer in order to finally put an end to his niggling injuries that saw him miss much of the 2017-18 campaign.

The 27-year-old only managed 22 Scottish Premiership appearances with Brendan Rodgers’ side, as he rivalled Odsonne Edouard and Moussa Dembele for a place in the former Liverpool manager’s side.

He scored nine goals, but consistency was lacking due to a number of injuries that saw him miss the odd couple of games here and there throughout the campaign.

With the season now over over following the Scottish Cup win over Motherwell and Scott Brown’s testimonial against Celtic, Griffiths will undergo surgery in an attempt to correct the problem.

Leigh Griffiths of Celtic arrives at the stadium prior to the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park on April 29, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The problem saw Griffiths miss a six-week spell from the end of January to the middle of March, sitting out six league games and three Scottish Cup encounters.

But if the operation is a success, the former Wolves and Hibernian hitman will return to action before the beginning of the season if he does indeed decide to remain north of the border.
