Celtic have agreed to loan out 23-year-old winger Mikey Johnston for the season with Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes now set to sign the Parkhead talent.

According to the Athletic, the attacker will sign for Vitoria today as Ange Postecoglou looks to trim down the squad ahead of tonight’s transfer deadline, with Johnston a talent who has hardly featured for Celtic this season despite being highly-rated at the club.

Hoops captain Callum McGregor has previously hailed Johnston as a ‘brilliant talent’, with former Celtic manager Ronny Deila reportedly looking at the winger as a potential option for Belgian giants Standard Liege, yet it is Vitoria who have now won the race for the attacker.

With Johnston wanting to kickstart his career again, a move to Portugal could do just that, with Vitoria one of the biggest sides in the country which in recent years have seen the likes of Ryan Gauld head out to and revive their footballing lives, and the Celtic star could follow a similar path.

Johnston signing for Vitoria on loan is an excellent move for all parties

Opportunities have been limited for Johnston at Celtic in recent seasons, yet signing for Vitoria is arguably the best decision all parties could have made this summer given the strength of the league the winger is joining as well as the platform the 23-year-old will be given to succeed.

Indeed, Vitoria have seen British talents like Marcus Edwards flourish at the club in recent years, and Johnston could emulate something similar to the former Tottenham wonderkid if he adapts well to life in Portugal and plays his football with the aim of impressing those back home in Glasgow.
