Scottish Premiership champions Celtic saw an £8.8m bid for Belgium star Castagne rejected by Serie A outfit Atalanta in January, according to reports.

Celtic are still interested in bringing Atalanta right-back Timothy Castagne to Glasgow and are planning a fresh approach ahead of the summer transfer window, according to The Times (28 April, page 50).

It is no secret that Celtic need a new right-back with Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa both out of contract and linked with moves away from the Scottish Premiership champions. Jeremy Toljan joined on loan from Borussia Dortmund in January but The Hoops do not have an option to make his short-term deal permanent.

And, according to The Times, they could make one more attempt to bring Castagne to Scotland in the coming weeks.

Celtic were heavily linked with the jet-heeled 23-year-old during January and made a bid of £8.8 million, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

Castagne, who can also play on the left, has produced three goals and five assists for Champions League-chasers Atalanta.

And the Serie A high-flyers could decide to cash in this summer given that the former Genk flyer has just one year left on his contract. The report adds that Atalanta would be willing to listen to offers of around £10 million, which would make Castagne their new record signing.
