According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United remain one of the leading contenders to sign Wigan Athletic striker Kyle Joseph.
It’s claimed that Celtic are pushing to sign Joseph, but the Magpies may end up beating them to his signature this summer.
A pathway to first-team football could win the race for Newcastle, and his contract situation appeals to the Magpies.
Joseph is out of contract at Wigan this summer, meaning he could move on – but the compensation sounds a little different to how it was first suggested,
The Daily Mail reported in April that Wigan were seeking around £230,000 in compensation from Celtic due to cross-border rules, and a move to an English club may be worth around £850,000.
Now though, this new report claims the deal could actually be worth just over £500,000 – around double what Celtic would be paying.

Joseph, 19, has impressed in League One with five goals in 17 games for Wigan, adding an assist to his record too.
A move to Celtic may have appealed to the Scot, but it sounds like Newcastle are now pushing themselves to the front of the queue in what could prove to be something of a coup for the Magpies given the teenager’s potential.
