According to The Sun, Celtic are interested in snapping up Everton defender Phil Jagielka on a free transfer this summer, after failing with a January move.

The Bhoys have seen Dedryck Boyata agree a move to Hertha Berlin, and with Filip Benkovic heading back to Leicester City, Celtic are losing two centre backs without gaining any money for them.

Neil Lennon will need to come up with some clever defensive additions this summer, and adding an experienced veteran to work alongside talented youngster Kristoffer Ajer would be a smart move.

Now, The Sun report that Celtic are interested in signing Everton centre back Jagielka, who announced on Tuesday that he’s leaving Goodison Park this summer.

It’s stated that Celtic wanted Jagielka in January but couldn’t secure a deal, and will now return to try and sign the 36-year-old once he becomes a free agent.

Jagielka’s £50,000-a-week deal (Spotrac) comes to an end in a matter of weeks, and he’ll be looking for one last big move before calling time on his playing career.

Former club Sheffield United are also thought to be keen on Jagielka, but Celtic will hope that the lure of playing in the Champions League – even at the age of 37 – will be too good to turn down.

Fans may not be too excited about signing veteran Jagielka on a free transfer, but with Celtic keen earlier this year, a move certainly makes some sense as Lennon looks to add some experience at the back.
