Celtic are reportedly amongst the group of sides interested in signing Middlesbrough midfielder Paddy McNair this summer.
According to a report from The Northern Echo, Celtic are prepared to meet Paddy McNair’s asking price, but may struggle to compete with Sheffield United when it comes to the Middlesbrough midfielder’s wage demands.
McNair looks set to be on the move this summer following a difficult first season with Boro in which he struggled to replicate the form that he showed during the latter stages of his time with Sunderland.
The Northern Echo reports that Jonathan Woodgate’s men are prepared to listen to offers for the Northern Ireland international, and both the Blades and the Hoops are willing to pay the £5 million that the Championship club spent on him 12 months ago.
However, the report adds that Chris Wilder’s men are willing to match his current wage, and suggests that that factor may be what lets Celtic down in their pursuit of the former Manchester United youngster.
McNair could be an incredibly shrewd signing for the Bhoys if they are able to win the race to sign the 24-year-old this summer. His versatility has seen him play in defence and in midfield, with five goals coming in his 16 league games during his final year with the Black Cats.
Injuries have proved a problem for McNair over the last couple of years, so it may be a gamble to pay £5 million. But if he does move to Parkhead and can stay fit for the majority of the season, he could potentially prove to be an inspired addition to Neil Lennon’s squad this summer.
