Celtic will have to pay slightly more than £9 million to sign Shon Weissman after the Wolfsberger striker secured the Austrian Bundesliga’s Golden Boot award, according to MSport.
If The Hoops were hoping that an ongoing financial crisis would see an Israel international become available for a fraction of his market value, it seems they will be left disappointed (Telegraph).
After establishing himself as one of the most prolific goalscorers in Europe, albeit in a far-from prestigious competition, Weissman’s price-tag has gone through the roof.
And, according to reports from Austria, Celtic will have make the former Maccabi Haifa man their most expensive signing of all time.
At £9.1 million, Weissman understood to be valued at around £100,000 more than Odsonne Edouard.
Whether Celtic will pay such a fee, however, is anyone’s guess.
The potential departure of SPFA Player of the Year Edouard would leave Neil Lennon with around £25 million burning a hole in his back pocket.
But despite being linked with countless clubs south of the border, a striker compared to the legendary Dennis Bergkamp by Gordon Strachan appears to have little interest in bidding farewell to the green and white army this summer.
So a deal for Weissman, who plundered 37 goals in 2019/20 and 30 in 33 league games, might have to be placed on the backburner for now.
“When it comes to the odds (of him leaving), all signs are goodbye, you have to say that,” Salzburg team-mate Michael Liendl told Krone when asked about Weissman’s future on Friday.
