Celtic are reportedly set to battle Manchester City to sign Lovro Majer during the summer.

Brendan Rodgers, manager of Celtic looks on ahead of the Scottish Cup Final between Motherwell and Celtic at Hampden Park on May 19, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

According to a report from The Sun, Celtic will have to see off competition from Manchester City if the Hoops hope to sign Lovro Majer during the summer, with Pep Guardiola eyeing an £8 million bid for the 20-year-old.

Majer is clearly threatening to enjoy an extremely bright future. The midfielder tops NK Lokomotiva’s goalscoring charts for the current campaign, having scored 11 times in 29 appearances in the league.

Rodgers was reportedly eyeing a move for the youngster as he looks to build on Celtic’s double Treble success, but The Sun is now reporting that Manchester City are preparing an £8 million bid for Majer with Guardiola looking at the starlet as a potential Yaya Toure replacement.

That certainly says a lot regarding how highly City rate Majer, and that could make life extremely difficult for Celtic if they also hope to try and bring the Croatia youth international in on a permanent basis.

Could Celtic maintain interest even if Manchester City win race?

The Sun reports that City may decide to loan Majer straight out for a year if they manage to sign the youngster during this window, and that should tempt Celtic to maintain an interest even if they miss out.

The Bhoys have shown to the Premier League champions that they can help their players develop significantly, having taken Patrick Roberts and kept him on the right path towards realising his full potential, so they should certainly put themselves in the queue if Majer becomes instantly available after heading to the Etihad.

But City’s presence in the race should not see Rodgers give up on signing Majer for themselves. Celtic offer the much clearer path towards the first-team and would also be able to offer Champions League football, so perhaps they may have a real chance to win a battle that they go into as clear underdogs.
