Celtic are increasing their efforts to sign Stade Rennais defender Brandon Soppy during the summer window under the orders of head coach Ange Postecoglou, per the Daily Record.
The Greek tactician is desperate to refresh the options available at Parkhead as he stamps his mark on the squad. Postecoglou had also hoped to have made more progress in his plans by now, and fears it is too late for any arrivals to play in the Champions League.
Celtic begin their qualifying campaign in the second round with a first-leg clash at home to Midtjylland next Tuesday. But Postecoglou already doubts having any new players available for the fixture, as he strives to sign a few defenders.

Celtic are still pursuing Rubin Kazan centre-half Carl Starfelt, but are prepared to back down. Fabrizio Romano claimed over the weekend that the Hoops had already shelved plans for the Swedish enforcer after talks slowed.
But while Starfelt is falling down Postecoglou’s shortlist, Soppy has risen rapidly to the top of Celtic’s plans. And the Hoops have been given encouragement over a deal, as Stade Rennais are determined to sell the attacking full-back.
Soppy has entered the final year of his £2,500-per-week contract at Roazhon Park. And Les Rouge et Noir would prefer to sell for around £4m than see him leave for free in 2022.
But Soppy has attracted a raft of admirers with his rise in Ligue 1. BeSoccer noted interest from Roma, Lyon and Borussia Dortmund among his suitors back in the winter. It was also suggested he may extend his contract to include a release clause, but did not agree terms.
Celtic can sign a powerful full-back in Stade Rennais defender Soppy
Julien Stephen only sporadically called on Soppy to feature during his time in charge at Stade Rennais last season. The 19-year-old made 11 appearances across all competitions, starting seven, including receiving minutes at centre-back, and failed to offer any assists.
But Celtic can sign a powerful full-back in Soppy, who contributes both offensively and defensively. Even if his chances to prove his potential on the pitch were infrequent last season. Giving Postecoglou reason to move the Stade Rennais man to the top of his plans.
Steven Nzonzi was full of praise for his teammate, Soppy, in December after facing Sevilla in the Champions League. The Frenchman said, via Challenges: “He is very complete, involved too. And for his young age, he is also very strong.”
