Celtic are free to sign Championship talent, according to a report.

Aberdeen's Jonny Hayes (C) scores their first goal

Sky Sports reported on Thursday that Celtic are now clear to sign Jonny Hayes after Cardiff City withdrew their offer for the Aberdeen winger.

Celtic and the Championship club had been battling over his signature for the past week.

According to The Record, the Dons told Brendan Rodgers to increase his latest bid after the Welsh club offered £1.2 million for the 29-year-old.

However, Sky Sports have now claimed that City have withdrawn that bid, suggesting that their exit “clears the way” for him to join the Scottish Premiership champions.

But The Record reported this week that Championship sides Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday were also interested in the Irishman, so it remains to be seen whether this transfer will produce more twists and turns in the near future.

Sky Sports also indicated that Hoops’ ace Ryan Christie could join Aberdeen on loan in a move which would appear to give Rodgers’s side the upper hand.

The 22-year-old impressed in the second half of last season at Pittodrie, scoring six times in 13 Premiership outings, and the Dons would be more willing to sell Hayes to Celtic if they sent Christie the other way on loan.
