Scottish Premiership champions Celtic hope to sign Charlton Athletic starlet Alfie Doughty on a bargain £750,000 deal, according to The Sun (6 September, page 61).
Neil Lennon’s Hoops are hardly short of options on the left-hand side, with Moi Elyounoussi and Mikey Johnston both fighting for a place on the wing, but that hasn’t stopped Celtic setting their sights on an “outstanding” 20-year-old talent.
Doughty was one of the biggest plus points in a season that ultimately ended in relegation for Charlton.
After loan spells in non-league, the London-born youngster exploded on to the scene with his powerful bursts of acceleration and eye for goal catching the eye of clubs north and south of the border.
When Luton Town made a bid recently, they probably didn’t expect to face competition from a Celtic side bidding for a tenth successive Scottish crown.
The Glasgow giants hope £750,000 will be enough to sign the jet-heeled winger, who has just one year left on his contract at a Charlton side once again facing an uncertain future on and off the pitch.

Interestingly, some of Doughty’s finest performances in 2019/20 came in a left-back role – perhaps the most troublesome position in Lennon’s squad.
“I thought he was outstanding,” Charlton boss Lee Bowyer told London News Online after a clash with Sheffield Wednesday in December.
“He’s not a left-back. He had to fill in at left-back and he was excellent from start to finish. Defensively and attacking.
“He was excellent.”
Boli Bolingoli might now be closer to the exit than ever.
