The Scottish Daily Mail (24/07 print edition, page 82) report that Celtic could re-ignite their interest in long-term target Robert Gumny this summer.

Neil Lennon is looking for another defender at right-back to add depth to the squad and provide competition for new signing Hatem Abd Elhamed.

The paper say that the Hoops have “run checks” on duo Silvan Widmer and Antonio Barragan to potentially solve their issues in the problem position.

However, Scottish Daily Mail chief football writer Stephen McGowan believes that Gumny could still come into the equation if moves for other targets fail and “hasn’t yet been ruled out completely” by the recruitment team at Celtic.

The report states that the Lech Poznan defender is rated as worth around £5m.

Gumny is the least experienced of the three mentioned at 21 but appears to fit the established signing model at Celtic Park most.

The Hoops have a preference of signing young, talented players before selling them for big profit when the time is right. Widmer is in his peak years at 26 while Barragan offers plenty of elite experience at 32.

Polish outlet Gazeta Wyborcza claimed back in January that Celtic were keen on signing Gumny but a move did not materialise.

He does have a bit of senior action under his belt despite his young age, making 72 appearances in total for the Ekstraklasa side.

Whoever arrives will have a great chance of solidifying themselves as the Hoops’ first-choice right-back with Elhamed’s mixed playing history suggesting he could have more of a utility role in positions across the Celtic defence than any real specialism on the right flank.

Celtic are crying out for someone to come in and make their name in the position having said goodbye to veteran full-back Mikael Lustig at the end of last season.

Kristoffer Ajer has filled in during early qualifiers and Lennon even switched to a 3-5-2 formation against Nomme Kalju but a dedicated right-back option will be needed for the tests ahead this season.
