Celtic may be turning their attention back to George Baldock.
According to the Daily Record, Celtic may now return with a new move for Sheffield United right back George Baldock after failing to sign Huddersfield Town’s Tommy Smith.
Smith will be heading to Stoke City instead, despite Neil Lennon wanting him signed for £2.5million, and that leaves Celtic desperately seeking a new right back.
Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa have both left the club on free transfers, meaning Lennon was forced to use centre back Kristoffer Ajer there against FK Sarajevo on Tuesday.
With Smith off the table, it’s now claimed that Celtic may look to launch a new move for Sheffield United’s Baldock, having already failed with a £3million offer.
Baldock, 26, played a key role in Sheffield United’s promotion to the Premier League, making 27 appearances for the Blades whilst picking up a goal and two assists.
Baldock mostly played as a right wing back, so he’s used to getting forward, and he has plenty of Football League experience with MK Dons, Oxford United and others.
He fits a similar profile to Smith; a right back of a decent age, with most of his development already done but a little potential still to be tapped into, plenty of experience in England and, importantly, solid and dependable.
As he’s United’s first-choice right back, Baldock won’t come cheap, and Celtic may have to get up to around £4million or even £5million to even get Sheffield United thinking, meaning he’s a much more expensive target than Smith.
