Manchester City’s reported pursuit of Celtic target Jose Cifuentes appears to be in doubt.

Jose Cifuentes of Ecuador controls the ball during the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup Third Place Play-Off match between Italy and Ecuador at Gdynia Stadium on June 14, 2019 in Gdynia, Poland.

It appears that Celtic may have received a potential boost to their hopes of signing Jose Cifuentes, with The Sun reporting that Manchester City’s move for the midfielder is in doubt.

Cifuentes has been linked with both the Scottish Premiership and Premier League champions for much of the summer, and he dropped a huge hint about his future last month when, in comments reported by The Scottish Sun, he suggested that he will join one of the two clubs.

The Sun has now suggested that City’s chances of signing the 20-year-old have taken a hit, with Universidad Catolica demanding more than £2 million due to his representatives being set to pocket 40 percent of the fee.

The report suggests that City’s move is on the rocks. And that could well be a boost or a blow to Celtic as they weigh up whether to make their own move for the youngster before the transfer window shuts.

It would appear that the Bhoys’ biggest rivals may be backing away in the race. But Celtic will, of course, also have to be prepared to pay significantly more if they hope to succeed where Pep Guardiola’s men have stepped back.

With Cifuentes likely to play an important role at Parkhead more immediately than if he headed to the Etihad Stadium, perhaps it is not out of the question for Celtic to be more willing to get closer to his asking price.
