Report: Celtic battling European duo in battle for Fabian Schar

Celtic are again being linked with Switzerland defender Fabian Schar.

According to Spanish newspaper El Desmarques, Celtic are in a three-way battle for the signature of Deportivo La Coruna defender Fabian Schar, alongside Hannover and Lazio.

The Bhoys have tied up just the one summer signing so far, as they paid out a club-record fee in order to sign striker Odsonne Edouard on a permanent basis from Paris Saint-Germain last week.

Brendan Rodgers will need more new faces though, especially if he wants success in the Champions League, and a centre back may still need to be a priority for Celtic.

Marvin Compper has made no impact since his January arrival from RB Leipzig, whilst Jack Hendry is raw, Jozo Simunovic is injury-prone, Dedryck Boyata has been linked away and Erik Sviatchenko has made his move back to Midtjylland permanent.

Now, Spanish newspaper El Desmarques report that Celtic are in a three-team battle for the services of Deportivo La Coruna defender Fabian Schar, and will battle Hannover and Lazio for him.

Schar, 27, is currently at the World Cup with Switzerland and played in the 1-1 draw with Brazil on Sunday, helping keep the likes of Neymar and Gabriel Jesus off the scoresheet.

The Swiss star joined Deportivo last summer, but having suffered relegation from La Liga, he is allegedly available for just €4million (£3.5million) thanks to a release clause in his contract.

That fits nicely into Celtic’s budget, and Schar is ideal for the Bhoys in terms of age and experience both domestically and internationally, but they may face a tough challenge landing him with such s trong competition.
