Report: Celtic and Burnley alerted as Nick Powell rejects contract

Celtic and Burnley are reportedly amongst the sides to have been alerted to the news that Nick Powell has rejected a new contract.

Celtic, Burnley and Brighton and Hove Albion have all been put on alert by the news that Nick Powell has turned down Wigan Athletic’s latest contract offer as they desperately try to keep their talisman, according to the Sunday Mirror (07/10; page 65).

Powell is out of contract with the Latics in the summer, and it would appear that he may be ready to leave the DW Stadium at some stage in the future after more than two seasons with the club.

The forward inspired Wigan’s promotion push last season, scoring 15 times in League One, and he has started well in the Championship this term with four goals and three assists coming in 12 appearances for Paul Cook’s men.

Unsurprisingly, Wigan have looked to tie the former Manchester United man down to a new deal, but the Sunday Mirror (07/10; page 65) reports that the offer has been rejected amid interest from the likes of Celtic, Burnley and Brighton.

Could Celtic win Powell race?

With two Premier League sides interested in signing Powell, it is probably going to be difficult for Celtic to win the race to sign the 24-year-old in an upcoming window.

Powell could not take advantage of his last spell in England’s top flight, and he would surely relish the chance to put that right in the future. Joining Celtic would represent Powell’s best chance to play regular European football, but the Hoops may do well to convince the attacker to reject interest from elsewhere to make the switch to Parkhead.

Although Powell’s form has dipped slightly in recent weeks, he would arguably be a good signing for a Celtic side that have lacked creativity this season and go into today’s clash at St Johnstone looking to score more than once in a game for the first time since August.
