Celtic have reportedly activated a 12-month extension clause in Scott Sinclair’s deal.
According to The Scottish Sun, Celtic have activated a clause in Scott Sinclair’s contract to extend his deal by 12 months – even though they could offload him.
The Bhoys snapped up winger Sinclair from Aston Villa in the summer of 2016, with Brendan Rodgers swooping to reunite with the man he worked with at Chelsea and Swansea City.
Sinclair made an immediate impact with a goal on his debut against Hearts, and he hit 25 goals in 50 games during his first season at Parkhead.
Sinclair’s record with Celtic now stands at 60 goals in 153 games, but he has been in and out of the side this season, especially under Neil Lennon.
The wide man’s contract was set to expire this summer, but The Scottish Sun report that Celtic have decided to activate a 12-month clause in his contract to extend that deal until 2020.
Sinclair is Celtic’s highest earner on £35,000-a-week, and whilst the Bhoys have activated that deal, it may just be to preserve his value given outside interest in his services.
It’s stated that Championship side Middlesbrough want to land Sinclair this summer, with a £2million bid potentially in the pipeline.
Smartly, Celtic have decided that attempting to recoup that cash is a better move than letting Sinclair walk away, even if they’ve agreed to keep paying those huge wages.
