Tottenham Hotspur are attempting to sign Celta Vigo midfielder Pape Cheikh Diop.

According to Galicia-based newspaper La Voz de Galicia, Celta Vigo are edging towards selling midfielder Pape Cheikh Diop to Tottenham Hotspur, as new manager Juan Carlos Unzue has other midfielders ahead of him in the pecking order.

Spurs haven’t yet dipped into the transfer market this summer, and remain the only Premier League club not to have signed a player since the end of last season.

However, with two weeks of the transfer window left to go, Spurs are starting to liven up in the transfer market, with the Daily Mail reporting over the weekend that £10million bid has been submitted for Celta Vigo midfielder Pape Cheikh Diop.

Now, Galicia-based newspaper La Voz de Galicia report that Celta are now inclined to accept Tottenham’s offer, primarily because new manager Juan Carlos Unzue has other midfielders ahead of him in the pecking order heading into the new La Liga season.

Unzue has the likes of Nemanja Radoja, Daniel Wass, Marcelo Diaz, Jozabed, Pablo Hernandez and new signing Stanislav Lobotka in his midfield ranks, all of whom may be ahead of Diop in the pecking order right now – and whilst Celta rate Diop highly, they may take the money as a result.

It’s noted that Diop himself is keen on a move to Tottenham as he likes the Premier League, meaning the 20-year-old’s move to North London could soon finalise his proposed move to Spurs.

A Spain Under-19 international, Diop has been tipped for a bright future in Spain, even if he has made just 27 first-team appearances for Celta, with Spurs investing in his potential rather than banking on him making an instant impact.

Diop would challenge with Harry Winks behind the likes of Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele should he make the move to North London, and reports in Galicia suggest that the move could be edging closer.
