Rangers, Celtic and Southampton could be in luck with Rapid Vienna under pressure to to sell £2 million-rated enforcer Dejan Ljubicic in the upcoming summer transfer window, according to Kicker.

The start of the new Scottish Premiership season might now just be seven days away, but you get the feeling that Old Firm rivals Rangers and Celtic have not even started in their attempts to improve to two best squads in the country.

It is no secret that Neil Lennon’s champions are looking high and low for a goalkeeper capable of replacing the talismanic presence of Fraser Forster at Parkhead while their blue-clad neighbours continue to be linked with a whole host of new signings.

And one position both clubs seem keen to strengthen is in the centre of the park.

The Mail reported in July that £2 million-rated Ljubicic has admirers on both sides of the city, not to mention in Southampton and also a Brentford side famed for unearthing affordable, under-the-radar talents from mainland Europe.

Rapid Vienna’s sporting director, Zoran Barisic, told Krone recently that he hopes of keep the 28-year-old Austrian in the capital. But with less than 12 months left on Ljubicic’s contract, the situation might be out of his hands.

New claims from Kicker today suggest that the homegrown hero, who is also a target for Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt, is likely to be sold as cash-strapped Rapid need to raise funds after being hit hard by an ongoing financial crisis which has robbed them of gate receipts.
