Everton were reportedly keen to appoint Carlo Ancelotti as their new manager.
According to The Mirror, Everton sounded out Carlo Ancelotti about becoming their new manager – but he wasn’t interested in a move to Goodison Park.
The Toffees sacked manager Ronald Koeman last month after a torrid start to the season, in which the Dutchman lost five of his first nine games to open the campaign.
Caretaker boss David Unsworth claimed his first win in the job on Sunday, coming from 2-0 down to beat Watford 3-2 at Goodison Park, having previously lost this first three games in charge.
Unsworth may yet be in line for an extended period as caretaker, with Everton currently struggling to land a manager – and reports suggest they missed out on a big appointment.
The Mirror report that Everton approached Carlo Ancelotti about taking the reins at Goodison Park, but the Italian ruled himself out of the running for the job as he prepares to bide his time on making a return to management.
Ancelotti, 58, lost his job as Bayern Munich boss in September, despite winning the Bundesliga title last season, and it’s no surprise that a manager of his calibre was a target for Everton’s majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri.
Having managed some of the world’s most prestigious clubs in Juventus, AC Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Bayern, Ancelotti has been at the top of the game for more than 15 years, and he is bound to attract interest.
With four league titles and three Champions League crowns to his name, Ancelotti would have been a huge appointment for Everton, but a return to the Premier League seemingly isn’t in the Italian’s plans right now.
That leaves Moshiri and Everton heading back to the drawing board, with the likes of Sam Allardyce and Sean Dyche still in the conversation for the Toffees – though fans may not get quite so excited about either of them as they would have with Ancelotti.
