Carles Gil celebrates after scoring the first goal for Aston Villa
Gil signed for Aston Villa last January from Valencia, under Tim Sherwood’s management, and showed signs of real promise in his opening games.
Last season was a lot more unsuccessful – as it was for many Villa players. He started 17 games, scoring two goals.
The Mail had reported ahead of the campaign that he was set for a key role in 2015/16 but it did not materialise.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder had not looked like being part of Roberto di Matteo’s plans, and his exit does not come as a surprise, even if it will be disappointing.
Gil is clearly a player with real potential, who could have really thrived in the Championship if made a regular in the squad.
