Rafael Benitez has admitted that Newcastle United youngster Cal Roberts’ progress is being monitored closely.

According to a report in the Chronicle, Cal Roberts’ future at Newcastle United is currently unclear.
Rafael Benitez has just days to make his mind up over whether to let Roberts leave Newcastle on loan or to stick around.
The youngster was one of the Magpies’ stars of pre-season, but he has not been in a match day squad over the term to date.
Instead, Roberts has impressed at under-23 level, and Benitez admits he is one of the prospects who is being closely monitored.
The Spanish boss said: “[Sean] Longstaff is doing well, Roberts is doing well. These are players we are monitoring very closely.”

Roberts has previously been sent out on loan to Scotland and to Gateshead to gain first-team experience.
Roberts is yet to really make an impact at St. James’ Park, but he is regarded as one of Newcastle’s better prospects.
Roberts showed an ability to play at full-back over pre-season, although his more natural position is on the wing.
Newcastle have a League Cup match against Nottingham Forest in six days’ time, and Roberts may be eyeing that contest up as a potential chance to get some game time.
