According to The Scottish Sun, Rangers are weighing up a move to bring defender Steven Whittaker back to the club on a free transfer.

Manager Pedro Caixinha enters his first transfer window as Rangers boss with plenty of work to do, given that the Gers lie a whopping 36 points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table.

Whilst many fans have expected centre back to be the area of defence that Caixinha looks to strengthen first, given that Clint Hill and Philippe Sendros both appear to be leaving the club, it seems that he is also looking for a right back.

The Scottish Sun claim that Caixinha is weighing up a move for ex-Rangers defender Steven Whittaker, who is available on a free transfer this summer having been released by Championship side Norwich City.

Whittaker, 32, joined Rangers from Hibernian back in 2007, and made over 200 appearances for the Gers, scoring 28 goals – and he played a huge part in the club’s run to the 2008 UEFA Cup final.

When Rangers suffered liquidation in 2012, Whittaker was given the chance to stay with Rangers and help the club rebuild from the fourth tier, or move on for free – and he chose the latter, joining Norwich City.

That angered many Rangers fans, and five years on, Whittaker is a free agent after 91 appearances for Norwich, whilst the veteran right back also has 31 Scotland caps to his name.

Whether supporters would want Whittaker back is another matter, but signing a right back would suggest that Caixinha doesn’t totally trust James Tavernier defensively, and bring Lee Hodson’s future into question amid interest from England.
