Aston Villa and Hull City are also said to fancy the Crystal Palace player, of whom Burnley’s manager is described as a ‘big fan’.

Burnley are ready to step up their pursuit of Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur, amid interest from Aston Villa and Hull City, The Sun reports [18 July, page 61].

Burnley were linked with a move for the Scotland international earlier this month, but have since signed Swansea City’s Jack Cork, who plays in the same position.

Nevertheless, Cork’s arrival does not appear to have interfered with the Clarets’ interest in McArthur, who is claimed to be valued at £2 million by Palace.

McArthur joined the Eagles from Wigan Athletic three years ago, but is said to have no future under new boss Frank de Boer and is out of contract at the end of the coming campaign.

If correct, Palace’s asking price is unlikely to deter either of Burnley, Aston Villa or Hull, although the Clarets could have the upper hand given their Premier League status.

Meanwhile, The Sun reports that Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce will sign Hull’s Ahmed Elmohamady this week, after agreeing a £1 million fee for the versatile Egyptian, whom he has already signed for two different clubs.
