Aston Villa have reportedly made an opening bid for Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton.
According to a report from The Sun, Aston Villa have offered £7 million for Tom Heaton with the goalkeeper’s contract talks with Burnley currently at a standstill.
Dean Smith’s men have wasted no time since sealing promotion to the Premier League, with Tyrone Mings becoming the club’s latest addition after an incredibly productive start to the window.
And it appears that the Villans’ next priority is signing a new goalkeeper. The Sun reports that Villa have made a £7 million bid for Heaton, who has just entered the final 12 months of his deal at Turf Moor.
The Sun adds that Burnley want a lot more for Heaton. But with talks over a contract extension so far bringing no success, they will also be aware that they run the risk of losing the 33-year-old on a free transfer next summer.
Masterstroke from Villa?
While Burnley reportedly want a lot more for Heaton, they are perhaps in a vulnerable position due to his contract situation – and that may make Villa’s £7 million bid look a lot more tempting than it perhaps should be.
It would be a brilliant move from the Villans to get Heaton through the door this summer. Jed Steer arguably did enough during his spell as first-choice last season to suggest that he can do a job at the highest level, but the England international could be a real upgrade.
He has been a revelation with the Clarets. And if Villa can get a deal done for anything like £7 million, Smith could be reflecting upon on what would appear to be another fantastic piece of business this summer.
