Burnley are divided about the potential arrival of John Lundstram, with the Sun (18 April, page 67) claiming that Sean Dyche is not exactly enamoured about signing the Sheffield United midfielder.

When the Clarets were taken over by American investors, the hope was the days of making do and mending may just be over at Turf Moor.

Burnley deserve so much credit for surviving and even thriving on a minimal budget – one of the smallest in the Premier League. But if Dyche wants to take this most unfashionable of clubs to the next level, investment will be required.

So you can understand why the Burnley boss may be feeling a little underwhelmed by the prospective arrival of a free-agent midfielder who has struggled badly this term for the club nailed to the bottom of the table.

The Sun reports that Burnley’s recruitment chiefs want to bring in Lundstram on a free transfer.

Dyche, however, would prefer to bring in a more ‘expensive’ player instead. You can see where the gravel-voiced gaffer is coming from.

Lundstram’s form over the last two years reflects that of his club as a whole – surprisingly impressive in 2019/20 before dropping off a cliff during a disastrous 2020/21.

The one-time Everton youngster has not scored in any of his last 30 games either.

The Sun (31 January, page 57) previously reported that Lundstram is determined to stay in the Premier League and earn a ‘lucrative’ contract away from Bramall Lane.

What he wants and what he deserves, however, may be two very different things.
